Canto I: I
I tasted sweetness but instead kissed bitterness on the lips
I exchanged uniqueness for sameness
and
Brokenness for seeming wholeness bright and red
but rotten to the core
You gave me beauty for ashes of a smoldering fire
that should have flickered out long ago
Abundance for a city of dead men’s thoughts and
dead men’s bones
Gifted me with riches in exchange for rusted spikes
Nails that I drove
Drown me in your infinite ocean
Stain me brilliant with your scarlet waves
Crush me and grind my bones to incense
And I will sing of you in the morning
Selah

Canto II: Head Injury Girl
I am the child of accident and circumstance
Created out of formless chaos
Broken, I become a new thing
I grasp for love, I want, I hunger
Behind these eyes, these blackened eyes
I am unknown, unknowable, unknowing
Drown me in your infinite ocean
Wash me in crimson fountains
And raise me up again unto dawnlight
Selah

Canto III: Lucien
Child of Light where art thou?
Come to me in blackest night
Heal my bleeding limbs pierced by stained glass shards
Lucien O Lucien whence comest thou?
I burn with wanting, with waiting
Drown me in oceans of light
Cauterize my wounds with brilliant luminescence
Wash me in pools of Eos
And I will sing of you at break of day
Selah

Canto the Last: Tuco Amongst the Tombs
I’ve found no answers in Religion
Only poltergeists of lesser things
That haunt the ghostly nights
Only questions in Tradition
Little phantoms that dog my heels
As I run through this graveyard
In search of gold but finding only dust
I lay dying in this city of vain imagination (The Lord is my Shepherd)
Parched in this nighttime country of mirages (I shall not)
Pernicious idols of my own creation leer at me from shadows (I)
Come to me O Adonai and bind my wounds with healing oils
Speak peace to me and quench my thirst from everlasting streams
Then I shall become again a child and bear thy yoke with gladness

Night Magic

The ceiling fan cools sweat on my forehead

And I open scars just a little to bleed these words.

My pulse beats a slow tempo in my ears in this midnight heat

I mix old pain and night magic like blue notes from an ancient saxophone

The walls creak back to me a susurration of evening shades

Hurt and triumph, sorrow and solace

I sweat this cancer from my pores

The product of my calloused hands-my calloused heart

So tonight I weave these words, I sing this melancholy melody

To the chorus of the night birds

Endless Sea

Drifting on an open sea

Lifeboat come and rescue me

Sirens reach from ‘neath the waves

To drag me down to a watery grave

Drifting on an endless sea

Savior come and rescue me

Dead things call from fathoms deep

Searching for my soul to keep

Captain come and calm the storm

Save me from aquatic doom

Silence waves and darkling things

Raise me up and I will sing

You’re hurting

You’ve been crushed

By the things of this world

You thought they would bring you happiness

But instead they left you full of sorrow

And anguish

And you feel there is no hope

But you must remember

That after darkness

Light always follows

The Son will shine upon your life

He will heal your wounds

And take away your pain

You will find in Him

You joy you sought in this world

Just trust in Him

And you shall be happy forevermore

Why do people care so much

For the things of this world?

Why do they search for happiness

In something that will not last?

Why don’t they see

That there is something much greater,

Something that won’t fade away,

Like the worldly things they so eagerly follow?

Why don’t they realize

That it’s all worthless?

The only thing that matters

Is God’s love.

It’s the only thing

That can bring them eternal happiness.

But they so easily dismiss it

Like it doesn’t matter

And follow the ungodly things of this world.

The leaves fall from your face

Where has that painted them gone?

It’s all turned to gray.

You paint the world with your tears,

Drowning hopelessness and fear.

It’s a heartbreak of fall.

In every snowflake hides a song.

As the music rains down I can feel my body get warm,

I am close to you,

In the heartbreak of fall.

Hidden in the snowstorm is a scream

As you say

“Look closer, girl, I can be seen.”

Here in the heartbreak of fall.

Here is the sun hiding the twinkle of your eyes.

Holding your smile ever so cherished in the sky.

Hidden in this paintbrush,

There is love in every swirl.

As it dances over me to paint a perfect world.

Heartbreak of fall.

You shared your love,

Moving the world to make a smile.

How happy they will be,

Generations soon to see this rainbow in a bottle.

Echoes of the Lost

Echoes of the lost and lonely

Only to be drowned out by the issues of the world.

Echoes of the lost and faded war

Is the enamel here to convince you that hope has died out.

What about the lonely children?

Break down these shadows that shield you from faith.

Let the light of God take you away.

Drowned in a future filled with pain.

When will hope exist again?

In the world of the echoes of the lost,

A little boy looks through the glass.

As he starts to wonder if hope is in his grasp,

Under the wreckage he finds it collapsed here.

Now we have relapsed in the war that scars our nation,

When hope is fired, watch the scars dissipate away.

Who will suture love in this sky of gray?

Who will be the clay to reunite our world?

Help the lonely girl in the photos that you see.

As she cries the sky of tumors sucks the spirit from me!

Where is the hope that is supposed to bleed through,

Tell me, hope, will I ever find you in the echoes of the lost?

Dancing for the Lord

With such joy in her heart

Her love for Him is so strong

She can barely contain it

Her happiness is so contagious

She spreads her joy to others

For she is celebrating

Her chains are gone
